There is much more to know, besides the time in other parts of the world, like the position of the sun, its declination and so on. EarthWatch illustrates this information on a map of the world. Besides the position of the sun or the phase of the moon, it provides other interesting details like the remaining time until the next season, the equation of time for major cities and more. You can see this information for the present, past and future. If you want to know about the age of the moon or the position of the sunrise during the battle of Waterloo or when the next solar eclipse will occur, this application can help you.
EarthWatch is free to try for a limited period of time. You can install it without any effort and it will take only a few moments. It is compatible with most Windows platforms and you can run it on mostly any computer, due to its low system requirements.
Besides the world map, you can find a rich set of information on the same interface. The software displays a city's time zone, the local and the Greenwich time, Julian date, the current season or the remaining time until the next season. It also displays information regarding the sun's declination, the location of the sunrise and sunset and if they are earlier or later than the day before.
A different city can be selected in the application's general settings menu, where you may also select a different latitude and longitude and set EarthWatch to use the system time or select your own time. The software allows you to set the year between 4000 BC to 4000 AD.
The night and day areas of the planet are illustrated on the world map and you can start an animation to see how night comes in some areas and daylight comes in others, as the Earth rotates. The interesting part is that you may set EarthWatch to go forward or backwards in time. Additionally, you can activate various elements on the world map. It is possible to display the position of the sun and of the moon, activate grid lines, display the world's time zones or bring up a sundial. You can also switch between a natural and political view of the map.
Pros
EarthWatch provides a large amount of information. You can see various astronomical details, not only for the current day, but also for the past and the future. Everything is done just by selecting different options from the interface's top menus, so using this application does not require advanced skills.
Cons
A toolbar would make the interface more comfortable. If you want more than a world clock, EarthWatch is the application you need. It offers a broad range of information and a user interface which is easy to understand even for beginners.
